Polignano on foot: Lama Monachile, old town and viewpoints

Updated October 16, 2026 · 6 min read

White houses of Polignano a Mare rising above the narrow cove of Lama Monachile

The short answer. Start above Lama Monachile, cross the bridge, enter the old town through Arco Marchesale and let the lanes lead you to the sea terraces. Finish on the seafront by the Domenico Modugno statue. The centre is compact enough to explore without transport; a guided walk or the Coast to Coast tuk-tuk tour adds context or reduces the walking.

1. Begin with Lama Monachile from above

The bridge gives the clearest first view of the pebble cove framed by cliffs and houses. Look before going down: the beach itself sits below street level, and reaching it adds steps and a climb back. In summer the small cove becomes crowded, while an early start gives both easier movement and softer light.

2. Enter through Arco Marchesale

Cross towards the historic centre and pass through Arco Marchesale, the traditional gateway into the old town. From here the point is not to follow a rigid map. Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II and Piazza dell’Orologio provide anchors, while narrow lanes repeatedly open onto terraces above the Adriatic. Keep voices low at residential doorways and do not treat every stair as a public viewpoint.

3. Pause at the sea terraces

Terrazza Santo Stefano is among the recognised lookouts, but the pleasure is the sequence of openings rather than one compulsory photograph. On a windy day, stay behind barriers and avoid leaning beyond walls for a picture. The limestone can be polished and uneven, so shoes with grip are more useful than beach sandals.

4. Finish by Domenico Modugno

Leave the old town, return past Lama Monachile and continue towards the bronze statue of singer Domenico Modugno on the seafront. From this side, the view back towards the cliff-built town is different from the bridge view. It also places you near Cala Paura if you want to extend the walk, though the main route is already complete.

Walking independently or taking a tour

Independent walking is best when you want photographs and café stops at your own pace. A guide earns the fee through local history and by making sense of the old town’s details. The tuk-tuk is useful when heat, limited time or reduced stamina matters, but it does not prove step-free access. The tour lasts 45 to 75 minutes, costs €22 per person (4.8 stars, 184 reviews) and, per its description, also covers neighbouring towns; confirm boarding and stopping arrangements with the operator.

Access and realistic expectations

The upper centre is compact, but the route includes stone surfaces, slopes and optional steps to Lama Monachile. The beach has pebbles and no reason to be added to every visit. Travellers using a wheelchair or pushchair should ask the tourist office or operator for a current step-free route rather than relying on a general claim about the town.

Our recommendation

Walk the upper route independently early in the day, then add the Coast to Coast tuk-tuk tour only if commentary or reduced effort will materially improve the visit. Polignano rewards short pauses more than a checklist: bridge, gateway, squares, terraces and the Modugno seafront are enough for a coherent first walk.
