Polignano with children: beach, old town or boat trip?
Updated October 16, 2026 · 7 min read
The short answer. With younger children, choose two of three: a short old-town walk, beach time or a boat trip. Trying to fit all three into the hottest part of one day creates more stairs, waiting and sun than most families enjoy. The cave boat trip with aperitivo lasts 1.5 hours and starts at €32.40, but check the operator’s current minimum age before booking.
Lama Monachile is beautiful, not effortless
The central cove is easy to see from the bridge and harder to use as a family beach. It is small, pebbly, reached below street level and becomes very busy in summer. The rocky seabed deepens quickly, so do not count on shallow paddling. Water shoes can make pebbles more comfortable, but swimming ability and close supervision still matter. Cala Paura may offer a calmer alternative, yet conditions change and should be judged on the day.
The old town works best in a short loop
Enter through Arco Marchesale, cross the main squares and choose one or two sea terraces. Narrow lanes provide patches of shade, but stone paving and steps make a lightweight pushchair easier than a bulky one. Do not build the route around every viewpoint. A gelato or early meal break is more useful than persuading tired children through another lane that looks similar to the last.
Choosing a boat trip
For many families, 1.5 hours is easier than a three-hour cruise. Duration alone is not enough: ask the operator about minimum age, child-sized life jackets, shade, toilet access, boarding steps and whether the swim stop is optional. None of those details should be assumed from a photograph. A speedboat can feel exciting but may be uncomfortable in swell; a larger or slower boat may suit cautious children better.
Seasickness and sun
Choose a calmer forecast and, where schedules allow, an earlier departure before afternoon heat and wind build. Sitting near the middle and looking towards the horizon can help with motion discomfort. For medicine, dosage or whether a product is suitable for a child, ask a pharmacist or paediatrician before the trip rather than relying on travel advice online.
A workable family day
Begin with the bridge view and a brief old-town loop while temperatures are lower. Take a long food-and-rest break. Then choose either the beach or a pre-booked boat trip, not both by default. Keep the final hour flexible: Polignano is compact, so abandoning an extra stop does not ruin the day.
When a boat is a bad idea
Skip it when the sea is rough, the child dislikes enclosed life jackets, the operator cannot confirm an appropriate age policy or your timetable leaves no room for delays. A bridge view, old-town walk and snack can still make a complete Polignano visit. Never frame a paid trip as the only way for a child to enjoy the coast.
Our recommendation
For most families whose children already enjoy boats, the 1.5-hour cave boat trip with aperitivo is a more manageable format than a long cruise. Confirm age and equipment directly on the booking page first. With toddlers or uncertain sailors, stay on land and keep the day deliberately small.
