Olive oil in Puglia: a tasting in Alberobello or the countryside?
Updated October 16, 2026 · 6 min read
The short answer. Choose a shop tasting in Alberobello if it must fit around a trulli visit. Go into the Itria Valley when you want the setting, the producer’s explanation and wine or an aperitivo to be part of the experience. The Itria Valley oil and wine tasting with a Puglian aperitivo lasts two hours and starts at €60, but its meeting point is near Castellana Grotte rather than central Alberobello.
What a useful tasting should teach
A tasting is worthwhile when it moves beyond bread dipped in oil. Expect an explanation of aroma, bitterness and the peppery sensation of different extra virgin olive oils, then a direct comparison. Some producers also demonstrate a flawed oil so that the difference becomes obvious. Confirm the language and exact number of oils before booking: programmes vary, and “tasting” can mean anything from a short shop introduction to a mill visit.
Alberobello: easiest to combine
An in-town session is the practical choice if Alberobello is already your main stop. You can walk through Rione Monti and Aia Piccola, then taste without adding another rural transfer. That saves time, but it may not include an olive grove or production area. Check whether the experience is a guided sensory lesson, a retail sampling or a combined audio-guide visit; they are not interchangeable.
The countryside: better context, more logistics
The Itria Valley option links oil to the landscape. The bookable experience near Castellana Grotte combines local oils, wines and a Puglian aperitivo in a private olive grove or stone courtyard. Its disadvantage is access: it is not a central Polignano activity, so confirm the meeting point and transport before paying. If anyone plans to drink wine, arrange a designated driver, taxi or transfer rather than treating the tasting as an excuse for a road trip.
From Polignano without confusion
Polignano, Alberobello and Castellana Grotte are separate stops. A tasting labelled “Itria Valley” does not automatically include collection in Polignano or admission to Alberobello’s trulli. Read the inclusions line by line and allow enough time between bookings. If you are already comparing a self-drive day with an organised excursion, our Itria Valley tour-or-car guide explains the trade-off.
Who should choose which
Choose Alberobello for a first introduction, limited time or a day centred on architecture. Choose the countryside for a slower food experience and questions about production. Families should ask how long the spoken section lasts and whether children receive an alternative to wine. Travellers with limited mobility should request exact information about surfaces, seating, toilets and access; an olive grove setting is not proof of step-free access.
Our recommendation
For a dedicated food afternoon, choose the Itria Valley oil and wine tasting and solve transport first. For a tightly planned Alberobello day, keep the tasting in town and prioritise a format that compares several oils with a guide. The best choice is the one that teaches you what you are tasting, not the one that merely adds more samples.
